PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of production capable of economically and efficiently producing acetoacetylated PVA resin particles which can give an aqueous solution having low water-insoluble contents and a high transparency. SOLUTION: The method for producing an acetoacetylated polyvinyl alcohol resin includes reacting a polyvinyl alcohol resin with a diketene in the presence of an organic acid, wherein the polyvinyl alcohol resin used is a polyvinyl alcohol resin powder having an average particle diameter of 250-1,000μm and containing not more than 20 wt.% particles of diameters smaller than 150μm.
