PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, which does not cause corrosion of a reactor composed of an SUS material. SOLUTION: In the method for producing 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid by reacting a 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid di-lower alkyl ester with a basic alkali metal compound in the presence of an aqueous medium in a reactor in which a vapor phase and a liquid phase coexist in the reactor to give a solution of a 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid dialkali metal salt and subjecting the solution to acid precipitation, the part of the reactor to be in contact with the reaction solution of the 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid di-lower alkyl ester and the basic alkali metal compound is composed of an SUS material and the reaction solution is heated so that the vapor-liquid interface of the reaction solution during the reaction is not directly heated.
