Provided is a novel porous clay material which has a high flexibility, a heat resistance, a porous nature, no electrical conductivity, excellent heat insulating properties and an adsorption ability and in which various chemicals can be enclosed. A porous clay material having a high porosity and a large specific surface area, which is obtained by: dispersing a clay serving as the main component, optionally together with an additive or together with an additive and a small amount of a reinforcing agent, in water or a solvent comprising water as the main component to give a clay paste; casting the clay paste into a mold equipped with a metallic bottom plate and a resin frame; and freezing the same followed by sublimation via freeze-drying to thereby form through-holes in the thickness direction.
