<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably perform inverted control, in a travel device and a method of controlling the same. <P>SOLUTION: The travel device 1 has a boarding detecting means for detecting the boarding of an occupant, a control means 233 for performing inverted control by controlling the drive of wheels 31 and 32, a mode selecting means 41a for selecting a boarding control mode of performing the inverted control in a state of being boarded the occupant and an empty vehicle control mode of performing the inverted control in a state of not being boarded with the occupant, and a determining means 232 for determining whether or not a detection result by the boarding detecting means coincides with a selection result by the mode selecting means 41a.
