<p>A method of discovering neighbouring cells by a femto base station in a wireless communications network, a femto base station and a central node are disclosed. The method comprising the steps of: populating a femto cell neighbour list for said femto base station by causing said femto base station to detect neighbouring femto base station by receiving their transmissions, said neighbour list having an entry including transmission characteristics and femto cell identification characteristics for each neighbouring femto base station detected; receiving a user equipment report including user equipment discovered transmission characteristics relating to a user equipment discovered femto base station; determining whether said user equipment discovered transmission characteristics correlates with any of said transmission characteristics of entries within said neighbour list; and when no correlation exists, interrogating said wireless communications network to obtain femto cell identification characteristics for said user equipment discovered femto base station and adding said femto cell identification characteristics for said user equipment discovered femto base station together with said user equipment discovered transmission characteristics as a further entry in said neighbour list. Accordingly, in addition to generating a femto cell neighbour list by detecting neighbouring femto base station by receiving their transmissions, user equipment reports are used to augment the list when the user equipment identifies a femto base station which is not currently included in the neighbour list such that a complete picture of neighbouring femto base stations can be built up based on reports provided by user equipment relating to other femto base stations that can be identified from different locations within the femto cell.</p> |
