A fuel cell separator having a first plate (20), the first plate (20) including an active surface (48) comprising a reactant flow field (46) and a header (30) fluidly connected thereto, an opposing non-active surface, and a header channel (50) fluidly connected to the header (30), wherein the header (30) further includes a recess (54) directly fluidly connected to one end of the header channel (50), wherein the recess (54) comprises a top perimeter (60) and a side wall (58). In one embodiment, the header channel (50) is formed on the active surface (48) of the plate. In another embodiment, the header channel is formed on the non-active surface of the plate and the side wall of the header further comprises at least one fluid port (94) fluidly connected to the end of the header channel. |
