A wind anemometer (10) comprises a light source (12) for transmitting pulsed light signals (20), a receiver (14) for receiving backscattered signals (28) from airborne particles for each pulse of the transmitted pulsed light signals (20), a detector (16) for detecting the received backscattered signals, and a processor (18) to determine location of the airborne particles (32) with respect to the anemometer (10) based on the detected backscattered signals (38). The processor estimates wind velocity using changes in location of the airborne particles over at least one time interval.
