When a telecommunications connection is established over a packet switched network 4 between a network access point 1 and a network-based service provisioning system 2, the network access point retrieves a geographical identity associated with the physical network termination 3 to which that termination is connected, and stores that identity for use by applications running on computer equipment 15, 16, 17 co-operating with the network access point. This allows location-based services to be provided to the user without input of an address. A particular application provides for a call centre 9 to identify the physical location of a voice call originating from an Internet-protocol telephone 15 or through a femtocell 17.
