A solid fuel stove has a firebox 13 providing a combustion chamber 15 constructed from blocks of a fired refractory including a carbide material, preferably silicon carbide. The carbide refractory has a catalytic effect on the combustion process, and also absorbs heat and dissipates the absorbed heat over an extended period of time providing space and fluid heating after the combustion process is completed. Combustion products are split between U shaped passageways (47,49 fig 5) either side of the stove to transfer heat to the stove body. A baffle 30 directs secondary air over a door 17 before secondary combustion. One embodiment has a plate (69, fig 10) with air holes causing turbulence for secondary combustion. |
