Disclosed is a stern drive for a boat. The stern drive includes an outer structure (16) which is attachable to the stern of a boat, a housing (44) supported in the outer structure (16) and a gear set and reversing clutch (46) inside the housing (44). The gear set includes a pinion which is rotatable about a transverse axis (90) and an output shaft (96,106) that extends downwardly within a fairing (24). The gear set and reversing clutch receive rotational power from a power source about an input axis (48), and transfer the power to the output shaft (96,106). The housing (44) is rotatable within the outer structure (16) for steering purposes. The fairing (24) and output shaft (96,106) are rotatable about the transverse axis (90) of the pinion thereby permitting raising, lowering and trimming of the fairing (24).
