A method of producing an agarose coated, agarose cell bead, comprising: (a) suspending secretory cells in agarose, (b) forming a bead from said suspended secretory cells of step (a), (c) incubating said bead of step (b) in humidified air, (d) coating said bead of step (c) with agarose, to form an agarose coated, agarose secretory cell bead wherein the agarose of the agarose secretory cell bead has a sulphate content of less than 0.2 wt% but greater than zero, a pyruvate content of 0-0.1 wt% and a Kjeldahl nitrogen content of 0-0.4 wt%, wherein said agarose form a gel which has a gel strength of at least 1200 g/cm2 (1.0 wt% concentration), exhibits substantial absence of DNA binding in 0.07 M or less TRIS acetate buffer, and an electroendosmosis (EEO) of 0.005 or less at a concentration of 1.0 wt%. Human, porcine or bovine pancreas islets cells can be used in the marcobeads for treatment of insulin dependent diabetes.
