PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for inputting characters of a terminal are provided to enable a user to rapidly and conveniently input desirable characters by enlarging the extensive keyset including characters. CONSTITUTION: A controller waits for key touch from a user(801), and confirms key input through the extensive keyset or basic keyset(803). The controller judges whether or not the inputted key is a character key(805). If so, the controller confirms whether or not the character corresponding to the inputted key can be combined with the character corresponding to the previously inputted key(809). If so, the controller combines the character corresponding to the inputted key with the character corresponding to the inputted key.
