A method for locating selectable items stored on a computer system is disclosed. A graphical user interface comprising a start button is displayed on a computer display device. User input to display a start menu is received. The start menu is a primary program launch menu and the user input comprises a selection of the start button. The primary program launch menu comprises a search text input interface and a plurality of selectable items and is displayed responsive to the receiving step. Each selectable item corresponds to an application program and the program launch menu further comprises a search text input interface. The search results are displayed within a predefined area of the program launch menu and the search results comprise selectable items matching text input received from a user via the search text input interface. Also disclosed is a method for providing a keyboard shortcut for launching an item stored on a computer system comprising steps of: (a) upon detection that a user has pressed a start menu key on a keyboard directly or indirectly connected to the computer system, displaying a start menu having a search text input box on a display device directly or indirectly connected to the computer system; (b) upon displaying the start menu, automatically providing an input focus that directs input text to the search text input box within the start menu displayed on the computer display device; (c) displaying search results within a predefined area of the start menu each time text input is received from the user via the search text input box, wherein the search results comprise selectable items matching text input received from the user via the search text input box; (d) automatically providing selection focus to a top search result, and (e) launching the selectable item corresponding to the top search result when receiving predefined user input while the top search result has selection focus. A method for locating selectable items stored on a computer system comprises steps of displaying a graphical user interface comprising a taskbar having a start button; receiving user input selecting the start button; and responsive to the receiving step, displaying a program launch menu comprising a plurality of selectable items. Each representative of an application program and the program launch menu comprises a search text input interface. |
