A system to recover energy from road traffic includes a set of fluid filled collapsible pipe loops 2 arranged diagonally across the road surface. As vehicles travel across the pipes the pipes collapse to pump fluid from gravity feed reservoir 16 via one-way valves 17, through the pipe loop, into the feed tubes 7 via one-way valves 7, and from the feed pipes via a nozzle to drive turbines 9. The fluid is exhausted from the turbines via outlet 12 to the fluid reservoir 16 with a head of about 900mm.
