PURPOSE: An air-conditioner and a control method are provided to enable user to easily confirm the operation state of the air-conditioner by differently moving a front panel arranged in order to cover a front air inlet port according to a cooling/heating condition. CONSTITUTION: An air-conditioner(1) comprises a main body wherein an air inlet is formed on the front surface of the main body, a front panel(20) which is arranged in the front of the main body in order to cover the air inlet and horizontally moves or rotates in the front of the main body, a front panel moving mechanism which forms an air passage between the front panel and the main body by transferring the front panel, and a controller which controls the opening and the shutting of the air inlet by moving the front panel to forwards and backwards and revolving the front panel toward the reverse direction in a cooling mode and a heating mode. The controller opens the air inlet by moving only one gear part forwards with rotating at least one drive motor after moving an upper moving gear part and a lower moving gear part forwards with rotating a upper driving motor and a lower driving motor to the same direction at the same time.
