<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a footrest open-close mechanism for wheelchairs different in type and size, which allows easy mounting on an existing wheelchair and easy adjustment, proper and stable opening/closing of a footrest at any time, easy lever operation at hand by a patient because of a simple structure, and includes a back-up function capable of safely holding the footrest at an "open" position. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A open/close device 20 includes: a base plate 5 in which a main shaft 5a and a stopper shaft 5b are implanted and embraced; a guide plate 6 capable of being fixed so that an L-shaped lever 8 is secured at the "open" position; and the L-shaped lever 8 pivotally fit so as to adjust a pivot radius L2 of a connector 9 corresponding to a pivot radius L1 of the footrest, wherein the guide plate and the lever are pivoted to the base plate.
