<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a member which is made of metal and has a closed cross section, by which the member which is made of metal and has the closed cross section is manufactured and also by which the member which is made of metal and has the closed cross section is partially reinforced. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing the member which has the closed cross section from a planar workpiece W1 made of metal includes: a first press-forming stage where the planar workpiece is press-formed into a projecting shape and also a projecting part W2a which is projected in the opposite direction to the projecting direction in which the planar workpiece is projected in the projecting top face part; a second press-forming stage where a press-formed surface W2d is formed by crushing the projecting part flatly by press-forming the projecting part of the planar workpiece in the direction in which the planar workpiece is projected into a projecting shape and also a closed cross section is made by displacing projecting side face parts W3, W4 respectively in the inward side; a reinforcing member fixing stage for fixing the reinforcing member R1 to the planar workpiece before the first press-forming stage; and a softening treatment stage where a part covering the projecting part of the planar workpiece is softened before the second press-forming stage.
