PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently desulfurizing molten pig iron by efficiently adding a granular desulfurizing agent superior in reactivity into the molten pig iron, when desulfurizing the molten pig iron with the use of a mechanical stirring type desulfurization device. SOLUTION: In a process of desulfurizing the molten pig iron with the use of the mechanical stirring type desulfurization device, this desulfurizing method includes adding the desulfurizing agent 7 onto the bath surface of the molten pig iron 3 which is stirred by a stirring blade 4, by top-blowing the agent together with a carrier gas through a top-blowing lance 5 to desulfurize the molten pig iron. At this time, the desulfurization reaction can be proceeded more efficiently by further blowing the carrier gas from the top-blowing lance toward the surface of the molten pig iron after the addition of the desulfurizing agent has been completed, and by setting a flow rate of the carrier gas which collides with the bath surface of the molten pig iron at 10 m/second or more.
