The device has a disconnecting switch (1) provided for interruption of a current path of a battery and equipped within a battery housing (2). A diode (6) is connected parallel to the disconnecting switch. The diode permits discharging of the battery, and inhibits charging of the battery when the disconnecting switch is opened. The disconnecting switch is controlled directly or indirectly by an output signal of a detector of a power supply device, where the detector is utilized for determining defects of a motor vehicle. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a power supply device comprising a detector (2) a method for operating a motor vehicle.
