METHOD AND DEVICE FOR VIDEO CODING USING MACROBLOCK GROUPS

In H.264/AVC, intra prediction is performed in units of single macroblocks. The macroblocks in a frame are coded in raster scan order. An improved method for video encoding comprises dividing (eb1) a video image into a plurality of MB groups, determining (eb2) a raster scan type (RST) within a MB group, encoding (eb3) the MBs of the MB group according to the determined raster scan type (RST), wherein intra prediction is used, and generating (eb4) an encoded video stream (Venc). The encoded MB group is inserted as a data block (MBGU) into the video stream. The data block (MBGU) comprises the encoded macroblocks (MB1l) and a macroblock group header (H1, H2) with an indication that indicates the determined raster scan type within the MB group.
