In a belt conveyer of the kind in which the belt is carried on driving cables, the belt is supported on the cables by cableengaging heads each provided with three or more cable-engaging jaws. As shown, Fig. 1, the belt 10 is provided with cross - straps 11 formed or provided with bent strips 12 at their outer ends forming the jaws J, which are lined with friction material 13. The straps 11 may be replaced by tubes or channels for receiving a spindle carrying the strip 12. To facilitate feeding and discharging of the belt 810, Fig. 8, auxiliary cables 814 are provided in addition to the main cables 816, the former being of lighter construction, Fig. 9, and engaging a different jaw on each cableengaging head 20 of the belt, to enable the belt to be passed around smaller reversing puleysl which are well clear of the driving and take-up gear 822, 823, respectively. Similarly, auxiliary cables 114, Fig. 11, may transfer the belt 110 from one set of main cables 116 to another set which may be at an angle to the first set. When this is the case, the auxiliary cables 114 are arranged to lift the belt off one set of main cables and lower it on to the other set of cables after changing its direction. Vertical bends in the belt 316, Fig. 13, are accomplished by auxiliary cables 314 pressing down on the upwardly facing jaws J of the cable-engaging heads 20 to hold the belt down on to idler rollers 324.
