The invention relates to a method for controlling the progression of vehicles (V1, Vi) in cable transport equipment (1), said equipment including vehicles (V1, Vi) with declutchable clamps circulating at a rate D, a traction cable (2) driven at a running speed Vc for driving the vehicles (V1, Vi) when they are coupled to the cable (2); and at least one passenger embarkment /disembarkment station including a section in which the vehicles (V1, Vi) disconnected from the cable (2) are driven by station driving means. The method comprises: the step of determining a threshold (Sn, T) that varies based on the running speed Vc of the cable (2) and/or the circulation rate D of the vehicles (V1, Vi); a detection step that comprises transmitting a detection signal upon the passage of vehicles (V1, Vi) in front of at least one fixed reference (R1, Rn+1); the step of measuring a variable (Ln, i, Kn, i+1) representative of a running length of the traction cable (2) between two detection signals; and the step of diagnosing the progression of the vehicles (V1, Vi) in the station by comparing the threshold (Sn, T) with the variable (Ln, i, Kn, i+1) representative of a running length.
