PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of crushing rock mass in a rotary hearth furnace, detecting rock mass formation on a hearth of the rotary hearth furnace based on a driving electric current value of a discharge screw and starting crushing of the rock mass by dart-shaped crushers without stopping the operation of the rotary hearth furnace. SOLUTION: In the method of crushing the rock mass formed on the rotary hearth 1 of the rotary hearth furnace for manufacturing reduced iron by charging material pellets including iron oxide of iron manufacturing waste etc. and reducing agents of charcoal materials etc. from a material charge port 2 to the rotary hearth 1 and heating and reducing the material pellets along with the rotation of the rotary hearth 1, several dart-shaped crushers 6 for crushing the rock mass arranged outside the furnace between the discharge screw 4 and the material charge port 2 start rock mass crushing when the driving electric current value of the discharge screw 4 exceeds a normal value by 10%.
