<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrophoretic display device improved in an afterimage or contrast reduction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The electrophoretic display device includes a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix on a first substrate, a common electrode on a second substrate and an electrophoretic material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate. In the device, the electrophoretic material contains positively charged particles and negatively charged particles; pixels are disposed at intersections of signal lines and scanning lines; each pixel includes a capacitor line, a TFT, a holding capacitor and a pixel electrode; the TFT has a source electrode connected to a first electrode of the holding capacitor and to the pixel electrode, a drain electrode is connected to the signal line, and a gate is connected to the scanning line; a second electrode of the holding capacitor is connected to a holding capacitor line; and a capacitor line-selecting low signal VSL or a capacitor line non-selecting signal VSC that is at a higher potential than the capacitor line-selecting low signal VSL is supplied to the holding capacitor line.
