The method involves evaluating an actual-viewing direction of a driver based on a reference-viewing direction for detecting concentration or inattention of the driver. A time target in which the inattention of the driver is tolerable is determined, and time duration of the inattention is detected and compared with the time target. The driver is alarmed during exceeding of the duration, where the reference direction and the time target are determined based on position of a direction indicator, information about a road course and/or information of lane maintenance assistants. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring concentration of a driver of a motor vehicle.
