PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for automatically discriminating whether the molten metal of a nonferrous metal or an alloy consisting essentially of the nonferrous metal exerts adverse influence on the quality of a casting or not in an extremely short time without depending on measurement by the human, which is apt to cause an error. Ž
SOLUTION: In the method for discriminating the cleanliness of a molten metal to be utilized for casting, a cleanliness discrimination data base correlated with data to be grasped from a solidification curve is created in advance, and, the cleanliness of the molten metal is discriminated based on the cleanliness discrimination data base, from a discrimination solidification time or/and a primary crystal supercooling degree width, wherein the discrimination solidification time is a difference between the time at which the molten metal to be inspected reaches a first solidification temperature set within the range till a solid phase is crystallized out into a liquid phase on a solidification curve and the time to reach a second solidification temperature set within a range during the drop of temperature from the temperature directly after it is made into a solid phase state, thus the cleanliness of the molten metal can be discriminated in an extremely short time without the error of measurement.
