PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image formation apparatus for increasing the speed of a document reading operation by preferentially reading the surface information of a document without immediately executing gain adjustment even when gain adjustment is enabled when a single-sided read mode is selected and a start key is operated. SOLUTION: The apparatus has a first image input unit 4 for executing gain adjustment of a first image sensor 46 upon power-on, and a read mode setting unit for selecting either a double-sided read mode or the single-sided read mode. In the double-sided read mode, both surfaces are read at the same time by a second image input unit 5 having a close-contact type second image sensor 51 for reading the back-side information of the document conveyed by a document conveyance device 3. In the single-sided read mode, one surface is read only by the first image input unit 4. When the single-sided read mode is selected, and the start key for starting a document reading operation is operated, the second image input unit 5 is configured to interrupt or stop gain adjustment even when the document conveyance device 3 is set in a predetermined state and gain adjustment is enabled.
