In a machine wherein a plurality of filaments travel simultaneously along parallel paths there is provided repetitively operating cutter means and guide means for guiding, to the cutter means, any filament on sideways displacement of the latter from its normal path, thus preventing this filament from becoming entangled with an adjacent filament. In the arrangement shown each filament or yarn F is caused to pass over a spool like guide 13 mounted on a metal tube 11. The tube 11 contains a metal cutter bar 12 which is reciprocated longitudinally by a suitable mechanism 14 and carries a pin 15 protruding through a helical slot 16 in the tube 11 into a straight guide track 17 so that as the cutter bar 12 is reciprocated tube 11 is turned to and fro about its axis thereby causing the guides 13 to make cyclic movements. The guide 13 has side discs 19a, 19b each of which has a gate 20 cut into it. When a filament F is unbroken it runs downwardly over the centre part 18 as shown in full lines of the guide 13. If a filament breaks there is a tendency for it to drift sideways to the chain dotted line position where it is caught by one of the deflectors 21a or 21b and passed through the gate 20, it is further deflected by either of the conical parts 22a, 22b into a slot 23a or 23b in the tube 11 where it is cut by the reciprocating bar 12 thus preventing it from becoming entangled with an adjacent filament. In another embodiment the guide spool 13 is replaced by a circumferential groove in the tube 11. |
