PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for tracking a target image which improves a success rate of target tracking by improving a recognition rate of a target image and preventing unnecessary increase in the amount of computer processing required for target tracking. SOLUTION: The apparatus for tracking a target image includes: a wave transmitting/receiving part 3 for transmitting/receiving a probe wave; a frame data converting part 4 for converting a reflected wave received by the wave transmitting/receiving part 3 into image frame data; a display part 9 for displaying the image frame data; an extraction region setting part 6 that sets a position of an extraction region of a target image as the absolute position of a maximum likelihood target image extracted from the image frame data of last time and sets the size of the extraction region corresponding to a maximum speed of the target and a cycle at which the probe wave is transmitted/received; a target image extracting part 7 for extracting a maximum likelihood target image from the target images of the extraction region; and a target image position calculating part 8 that detects a relative position of the maximum likelihood target image, calculates the absolute position of the maximum likelihood target image, and gives notice to the extraction region setting part 6.
