In a ship structure the metal elements are electrically insulated from each other to prevent the production of electric currents in the structure due to movement in the earth's magnetic field. The elements are insulated by insulating material between the elements and between the rivets and the elements. The rivets are insulated by a sheath of polyester resin reinforced by glass fibres. This sheath is protected, during riveting, by a steel sleeve, interposed between the sheath and rivet.</p> |
