An image identifier extracting apparatus comprises: a first feature quantity extracting means that extracts from an image a first feature quantity in accordance with the dimensions of a feature vector; a second feature quantity extracting means that extracts from the image a second feature quantity different from the first feature quantity in accordance with the dimensions of the feature vector; a feature quantity type deciding means that analyzes, as an analysis target, at least one of the image and the extracted first feature quantity to determine whether there exists any effectiveness of identifying the image of the feature vector constituted by the extracted first feature quantity, decides that the type of the feature quantity used for the dimensions is the first feature quantity if there exists such effectiveness, decides that the type of the feature quantity used for at least some of the dimensions is the second feature quantity if there exists no such effectiveness, and decides that the type of the feature quantity used for the remaining dimensions is the first feature quantity; and a feature vector generating means that generates the feature vector of the image from the extracted first and second feature quantities in accordance with the decided type of the feature quantity used for the dimensions.
