The method involves illuminating a brake light (32) during actuation of a brake pedal (50) or during beginning a delay of an ahead driving motor vehicle (30) for a pre-determined length of time with a pre-determined signal strength, such that a risk value is signaled depending on the delay. The risk value is decreased to zero after completion of the delay and/or of actuation of the brake pedal within the length of time depending on the size of the risk value. A logarithm of the risk value is signaled. The brake light is designed in a form of a luminous bar. An independent claim is also included for a delay warning device in a motor vehicle.
