A downhole mass spectrometer has a first mass analyzer to isolate specific ions within a sample received in the downhole tool, a second mass analyzer to stabilize the ions isolated by the first mass analyzer, and a third mass analyzer to catalog the stabilized ions. The device may use a closed ion source. The device may provide isomer discrimination information on the molecule from which isolated ions are generated. At least one, and preferably all, of the mass analysers are mass filter quadrupole spectrometers. The device may be conveyed on a drill string or a wireline, and includes a means for receiving a sample of drilling fluid or formation fluid. |
