PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a modified pseudo-polyrotaxane and modified polyrotaxane with good production efficiency and high yield; to provide a new modified pseudo-polyrotaxane and modified polyrotaxane. SOLUTION: The modified pseudo-polyrotaxane is produced by a method comprising a reaction to pierce an opening portion in a cyclic molecule of a modified cyclodextrin with an axis molecule to form a clathrate complex, wherein the axis molecule has a number-average molecular weight of≥1,500 so that the covering ratio of the modified cyclodextrin to the axis molecule is≤80%.
