The method involves winding a control coil (11) on the yarn which is driven by a winding drum (26). A braking force is adjusted for braking the control coil, depending on the material or the structural characteristics or the density or the diameter of the control coil. The braking force is stopped as a function of the yarn characteristics. An independent claim is also included for a coil winder of a textile machine for executing coil winder operating method.
