The invention relates to a method for diagnosing the operation of a water purification system comprising a device with a filtering medium, the material of the filtering medium being made up of particles, comprising the following steps: - a step of characterising at least one physical and/or mechanical parameter of the filtering medium device so as to establish a perviousness value Ks (m/s), - a step of comparing said established perviousness value Ks with a predetermined range of perviousness values [kmin; kmax] representing a satisfactory operating status of the purification system, and - a diagnosis step during which a filtering medium device operation indicator is assigned according to the result of the comparison step. The invention can be used in a standalone or non-collective sanitation (NCS) systems.
