The collision damping component has a vehicle body cross member (1), where a deformation element (2) with approximately U-shaped cross section is fastened, and is positioned behind a relatively soft bumper cover. The deformation element is provided with slots (6) over its length aligned in vehicle longitudinal direction. The slots pass over horizontal shanks (3a,4a) of the deformation element, fastened on the cross member in a vertical base plate (5).
