<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easy means imparting fluorescence and a nonlinear optical characteristic to a product. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing 9-(4-aminophenylethynyl)-10-(4-nitrophenylethynyl)anthracene, in a high yield includes causing 9-bromo-10-iodoanthracene derived from 9,10-dibromoanthracene to react with 4-nitrophenylacetylene or 4-aminophenylacetylene to site-selectively introduce a 4-nitrophenylethynyl group or a 4-aminophenylethynyl group and subsequently introducing the other that remains to be introduced, making use of the difference in the reactivity of bromine and iodine.
