The device (8) has a folding lever (10) tiltable around a spindle in a fixed leaf plane, where the spindle runs parallel to a folding surface. Locking bars are movable in a folding longitudinal direction. A toggle lever is tiltably connected with the folding lever and the locking bars. A flange projects in a folding clearance area and is provided lateral to the folding lever. The spindle is supported or guided in or at the flange and includes a guide i.e. slot, for the spindle. A free end of the folding lever projects above the flange in a folding longitudinal direction in end positions.
