<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording and reproducing device which can stabilize and hold the recorded information without reversing the magnetization of dots by the surrounding dots after recording and achieve a high recording density when recording on a bit patterned medium loaded in it. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The device is a magnetic recording and reproducing device using a bit patterned magnetic recording medium 4. It makes the gaps between the dots 43, 43 of a magnetic recording medium 4 by using a magnetic material having Curie temperature lower than the curie temperature of a low curie temperature magnetic material 44 constituting the dots 43, and has a heater 18 formed around the head 23 recording on the magnetic recording medium 4 to heat the low Curie temperature magnetic material 44 when recording.
