<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator capable of braking the movement of a step when necessary, based on the content of an operation command and a moving state of the step. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This escalator has a step chain, the step, a main driving transmission sprocket fixed on an upper sprocket shaft, an electric motor, a reduction gear having a prime mover sprocket fixed to a shaft for reducing and outputting motive power from the electric motor, a main driving transmission chain arranged between the main driving transmission sprocket and the prime mover sprocket, an electromagnetic brake part for braking the movement of the step, a braking sprocket fixed to a shaft of the electromagnetic brake part, a self-travelling preventive sprocket fixed on the upper sprocket shaft, a self-travelling preventive chain arranged between the braking sprocket and the self-travelling preventive sprocket, and a control part for controlling the electromagnetic brake part based on the content of the operation command and the moving state of the step.
