The device e.g. in-the-ear hearing aid (10), has a receiving device receiving an input signal (14) i.e. electromagnetic signal, and an ear piece (16) outputting a specified acoustic signal i.e. warning signal. A controller (15) controls the ear piece such that the ear piece outputs the acoustic signal when the input signal fulfills a predetermined criterion that refers to volume and time period of the input signal. The acoustic signal is emitted by the controller when the size of the acoustic signal is based on an integral of volume level of the input signal over a time period. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a hearing device.
