LIGHT RECEIVING DEVICE, OPTICAL DISC PLAYER, AND METHOD OF SELECTING LIGHT RECEIVING ELEMENTS

A light receiving device wherein the effects of side lobes of a light spot are easily suppressed.  The light receiving device comprises a light receiving array including a plurality of light receiving elements, and a selecting means for determining whether to use each of the plurality of light receiving elements included in the light receiving array or use output of the same.  Further, this selecting means identifies the light receiving elements that are in the range of the main lobe of the light spot focused on the light receiving element array or the light receiving elements that fall outside the range of the main lobe, and enables use of the light receiving elements that are in the range of the main lobe or use of output from said light receiving elements.
