<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader and an image forming apparatus capable of removing or attenuate an image of a stain sticking on a transparent original table made of glass etc., and suspended dust entering a gap between the original table and a document from an image of the document read through the original table. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A background image of the original table is previously read in a state wherein no document is placed, the image of the stain and dust is detected in the read background image and stored in a storage unit, and when a document to be read is read, an image which shows a connection pattern included in the read document image and approximates the image of the dust is searched for including change in position and angle, so that when an approximating pattern is detected, the connection pattern is removed or attenuated.
