<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and accurately detect a slip of a belt installed between an electric motor for driving an escalator and a reduction gear for reducing a rotating speed in the electric motor. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This belt slip detecting device 60 has an electric motor torque control part 62 for controlling torque of the electric motor 26, an electric motor rotation detecting part 64 for detecting rotation of an output shaft 32 of the electric motor 26, a reduction gear rotation detecting part 66 for detecting rotation of an input shaft 36 of the reduction gear 28, and a slip determining part 68 for determining a slip of the belt 44. Since the slip determining part 68 determines the slip of the belt 44 based on a detection result detected by the electric motor rotation detecting part 64 and the reduction gear rotation detecting part 66 when the electric motor 26 outputs predetermined torque when stopping the escalator 10, the slip of the belt 44 can be automatically and accurately detected.
