<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus stably forming a high-quality image over a long term by suppressing production of ozone and nitrogen oxide concurrently with preventing uneven discharge of a saw tooth and stabilizing potential by electrification on a surface of a photoreceptor, and also to provide a control method therefor, a control program and a recording medium. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus includes an image carrier, a potential detection means, a needle electrode, a cleaning member and a control means. The needle electrode is cleaned by the cleaning member, and then the potential by electrification of the electrified image carrier is detected by the potential detection means. The control means compares the potential by electrification with a set value, and selectively performs any one control operation out of first control operation, second control operation, third control operation and fourth control operation on the basis of the compared result.
