The embodiments of the present invention provide a method and apparatus for discovery and notification of the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) device data model, and are able to solve the problem of discovering the UPnP device data model by the control point. The method provided by the embodiments of the present invention includes: the URL of the data model description is carried either in the UPnP service description or in the UPnP device description, or the data model description is carried directly in the UPnP service description, or the UPnP action for acquiring the URL of the data model description is added, or the UPnP action for acquiring the data model description is added, the control point acquires the device data model description by the URL of the data model description, and thereby discovers the UPnP device data model by parsing the data model description. The technical schemes provided by the embodiments of the present invention can be widely applied in the digital home network devices.
