Steam iron comprising a sole plate (1) in thermal contact with a heating body (10) comprising an electrical resistor (11), said sole plate (1) having steam outlet holes (1A) and the heating body (10) having a steam chamber (12) for the production of steam as well as an insert (8) made of a different material to that of the heating body (10), said iron being characterized in that said insert (8) is made of a solid nonporous material having a higher heat capacity per unit volume than the material of the heating body (10) and in that said insert (8) is located in the lower half of the heating body (10) in order to be close to the sole plate (1).
