<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the accuracy of detecting a subject, and to reduce the erroneous detection of the subject. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An evaluation value calculation dictionary storage unit 300 stores an evaluation value calculation dictionary for simultaneously calculating an evaluation value for evaluating whether any of a plurality of face directions is included by face direction. An evaluation value calculation unit 235 extracts a luminance value from two points in a decision subject image by using the evaluation value calculation dictionary, and compares the difference value of the extracted two luminance values with a threshold, and sequentially performs the arithmetic operation of the value of weight according to the comparison results for simultaneously calculating the respective evaluation values of the plurality of face directions. A selection unit 236 selects the prescribed number of evaluation values satisfying fixed conditions from among the respective evaluation values of the plurality of face directions. A face decision unit 237 determines whether the face is included in the decision subject image by using the face decision dictionary associated with the face directions related with the prescribed number of evaluation values selected by the selection unit 236.
