<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus for reducing the deficiency of an image due to the corner folding of an original as much as possible. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This image reading apparatus for reading both front and back sides of an original while conveying the original is provided with: a deficiency detection means having a passage sensor for detecting the presence of the original at a plurality of detecting positions perpendicular to the conveying direction of the original for detecting the deficient section of the outer shape of the original; a valley folding detection means for detecting the shadow of the edge of the inward angle generated when the deficient section is a valley type angle folding from the read image of the original by collating the shadow with the position of the angle of the deficient section of the folded original calculated by assuming that the external shape of the original is a rectangle; and a restoration means for adding the outside image of the shadow of the edge to the image of the opposite face of the face on which the valley type angle folding has been detected.
